Computer Engineering vs Information Technology in the Philippines
Based on Computer Engineering - ACM CCECC , "Computer Engineering is defined as the discipline that embodies the science and technology of design, construction, implementation, and maintenance of software and hardware components of modern computing systems and computer-controlled equipment."
If you think of other Engineering courses like Civil or Mechanical, Computer Engineering is also like them but in Computers, one main difference is the lack of board exam which i explained here .
According to BS in Information Technology (interface.edu.ph) , "Information Technology (BSIT) program prepares students to be IT professionals who are able to perform installation, operation, development, maintenance and administration of computer applications."
Keywords there are installation, operation, development, maintenance, and administration which means there is already a product (which was built by engineers) but it needs some work to make it last and work longer and run efficiently which is the job of an Information Technology.
Think of it this way. Imagine a car company, Computer Engineering is the manufacturer while auto mechanics are Information Technology.
Summary:
If you are curious about hardware and software and want to explore building a machine, go to Computer Engineering. If you want to maintain or fix something in the hardware or software, go to Information Technology.
Remember this. Computer Engineers design, implement, and construct while Information Technology maintains, fixes, solves, and sometimes develops.
